Xiaomi sets-up manufacturing unit and launches Redmi 2 Prime smartphone, that's made in India for India
The Chinese based consumer electronics manufacturer, Xiaomi have set-up their first manufacturing unit in India, that is at Sri City of the Andhra Pradesh state, following this is their latest make for the markets in the countryside, with a brand new smartphone, Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime, that has been launched as the part of "Make In India" initiative. It was the Chief Minister of AP, Chandrababu Naidu, who took the wraps off the new phone at the launch event.
"Redmi 2 Prime is the first smartphone from Xiaomi to be assembled in our facility in Sri City. We would like to thank Andhra Pradesh government for helping us to start local manufacturing within just six months. Initial talks started in February and today we have already started to sell the Redmi 2 Prime," said the Global Vice President of Xiaomi, Hugo Barra.
Xiaomi has exclusively partnered with Foxconn, which is the Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing company, in the country for this facility and they're looking forward to manufacture all of it's smartphones to be sold in India in the country itself. As for now, the company is importing every component for making a smartphone and selling it in India, directly from China and is assembling at their Sri City plant. "This is like the typical chicken and egg story. Unless there is any smartphone manufacturing happening in the country, you cannot expect to get components locally," cleared Barra.
Seeking into the firm's past, Xiaomi has got the very same kind of manufacturing set-up in Brazil, that's too in partnership with Foxconn, making India their third settlement after the homeland of business in China, second in Brazil, respectively. "The unit in Brazil and the one here are exactly the same. It took us about three times more the time to start manufacturing in Brazil than in India," quoted Hugo Barra.
